The history behind our space

About our special space
1899
Originally built as a carriage house in the heart of the Upper East Side, a symbol of 19th-century crafstmanship and architecture.

1950s-1990s
Home to renowned textile artists D.D. and Leslie Tillett, whose designs were worn by Greta Garbo, Jackie Kennedy, and other icons of style and culture.

2008
Fully redesigned by acclaimed architect Toshiko Mori, transforming the house into a sustainable, light-filled, LEED-certified residence.

2011
The building reopens as the Waterfall Mansion, a private art gallery founded by Kate Shin, showcasing works by Picasso, Warhol, and other masters, continuing its deep connection to the arts.

2025
The space becomes La Maison School of Music, carrying forward its artistic legacy through sound, learning, and beauty. Just steps away from the Met, music now finds its home in a house that has always belonged to art.
